The MAISD serves 12 local school districts within Muskegon County's 557 square miles. Approximately 31,390 public school students, 1,130 public school academy (charter) students, and 1,471 nonpublic school students were enrolled for the 2006-07 school year.

Over 1,000 preschool students were also enrolled in the Head Start Program managed by the MAISD and delegate school districts. The Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) is operated by the MAISD on the local community college campus.  It served 714 high school juniors and seniors from throughout Muskegon County in 2006-07.  Over 125 middle school students attended week-long summer courses as well. The MAISD runs a program for expelled students entitled “You Turn” in collaboration with local school districts. In 2006-07, there were 5,215 special education students within the MAISD service area--5,031 received services from their local school districts while the remaining SCI/SXI, Autistic, and MoCI students attended the MAISD's center-based program at Wesley School. Monitoring these programs is a mandated service provided by the MAISD.

The Technology Services Department of the MAISD oversees nearly $550 million for 31 school districts in six counties and serves as fiscal agent for the region. The MAISD also provides pupil-auditing services and administered over $15 million dollars in federal grants during the 2006-07 school year. Instructional services are provided in the areas of school improvement and curriculum development with specific consultant services available through the MAISD Regional Mathematics and Science Center, and in the areas of the Arts, Early Childhood, Health, Literacy, Social Studies, Talent Development, and Vocation/Career Education. Special education consulting services include the areas of assistive and augmentative communication, behavior management, and autism. The MAISD also represents local districts as an active participant in community agencies/organizations and statewide associations.
